The story of Rosa*

The situation: Rosa was a very sweet 8-year-old girl when she started tutoring classes at Niños del Lago. Starting her second gr Rosa had very good oral communication skills, although her reading and writing skills were almost nil. She did not recognize vowels or consonants but had a good attitude to learn.

The challenge: Rosa’s biggest struggle was overcoming her insecurities and self-criticism. She was very hard on herself whenever she made a mistake. When she didn’t understand something, she became frustrated and self-defeating.

The progress: In her second year of the mentorship program, her progress was tremendous. She was always well-behaved, but now she’s much more confident and patient with herself. Rosa is already reading and writing, at a competitive level for her age. More importantly, she feels very proud of herself.

Rosa comes to her tutoring classes with the desire to learn and build positive habits for her future life. Initially she dreamed of being a mother, now, in addition, she talks about being a teacher and contributing to her family and community.
