Our program is designed to provide a life-changing experience for Guatemala's most impoverished children. These children, selected by local social service agencies throughout Guatemala, will spend one week at our camp, receive nutritious food and comfortable shelter (perhaps for the first time in their lives), as well as the opportunity to play and learn.
The activities have been designed to offer fun and learning through sports, dance, and other physical activities, but also to teach an appreciation of Guatemalan culture and the value and beauty of the natural world.
Special emphasis will be on developing programs and activities that enhance the self. This emphasis draws from research showing that those camps focusing on developing the self are more effective than solely recreational camps. Further, our programs will be designed to incorporate supportive relationships with camp staff, challenging activities, and involvement in decision making that is appropriate to their age.
All Niños del Lago programs are derived from Latino cultural concepts. Drawing upon these rich traditions naturally increases a Guatemalan child's self-concept and self-esteem.
Age-appropriate activities are challenging and offer the children meaningful involvement in their camp stay:
The children we host at Niños del Lago will each have the opportunity to become members of one of our special clubs, Las Golindrina's or Los Falcones, which designates the child as a member of a group promoting positive leadership qualities for the future of Guatemala.
