Why Guatemala?

You might ask, “…Why Guatemala?  Why, among all the need in the world should I get involved in helping the children of Guatemala?

In 1954 after a US Government led a coup to depose the popularly-elected democratic president of Guatemala, a civil war was ignited that devastated an entire generation of Guatemala’s children, leaving many of them orphaned, abandoned and out cast without a sense of purpose or hope and with no vision of a future.  Today, the fall out from the 36-year civil war continues as hundreds of thousands of children now live in dangerous urban environments or poor and remote rural villages where there is little opportunity for safe outdoor recreation, play, creativity or activities that foster social development

Every day, thousands of children are abused, molested, starved, and abandoned and every day eight children die a violent death on the streets of Guatemala City. We are all aware of these tragedies and that crime against children in Guatemala is on the rise and spreading throughout all the Americas.  But, what can we do?

Dreams begin with hope.

Without hope, there are no dreams of a better future.  With dreams, these children have little motivation to remain in school, little inspiration to stay away from gangs, drugs or street crime.  Without the ability to imagine a better future, it is nearly impossible for them to escape the cycle of poverty and violence.

We all share the dream.

We no longer live in separate worlds – worlds separated by culture, language and geography.  Our worlds are intertwined in many ways and we can no longer isolate ourselves from the problems others face on our continent, in our hemisphere and on our planet.  We are Americans, Europeans, Africans, Asians – all world citizens who share the same hope and dreams for our children and I believe that unless we work together to help find solutions to the serious problems in poor Central American countries, especially in Guatemala, we continue to face the fallout in our own communities for generations to come.

Please Join Us!

Join us and choose Guatemala as a place that can be healed and a place that can become a model for change.  This beautiful country, with its soaring mountains, mysterious volcanoes and 8 million native American Mayan people is a magical place rich in culture, beauty and spirit.

We can look beyond our cultural differences and see that we are one people, one family on our planet and we can affect the lives of the innocents and empower them with the skills and confidence they need so that they may themselves help their beautiful country, Guatemala.

Helping Guatemalans help themselves. One child at a time.

We can still help stop the flood of crime, ignorance and suffering. We can empower the brightest of the poorest children in Guatemala to help change their own lives.

We can look beyond our cultural differences, and see that we are one people and one family on our planet.  We can affect the lives of the innocents and empower them with the skills and confidence to change their country.

We can choose to take a stand -- choose to offer children hope.

We can use our lives and our relative-wealth to effect change in the world, both in our communities and out in the world we all share.

Join us and choose Guatemala as a place that can be healed, a place that can become a model for change.   This beautiful country, with its soaring mountains, mysterious volcanoes and 6 million indigenous Maya (who are truly native Americans) is a magical place with people who are too rich in culture, beauty and spirit to abandon to hopelessness and despair.

Guatemala is where a small group of dedicated volunteers have decided to take a stand.  The place we can’t turn away from.

The place where our hearts cry out no enough

But we can’t do this work without the help of people like you.
